Hiking to Merano high above the Passeier Valley is an experience especially if you use one of the numerous wall paths. In low rainfall regions in the Alps, irrigation channels were used to supply water to fields and fields. Today they are mainly used for hiking. (Hikes and Walks Meran )*
Saltauser Waalweg to Meran – the tour
The Saltauser Waalweg leads for almost 10 km from Saltaus im Passeiertal directly to Meran.
The hike begins at the valley station of the Hirzer cable car. Three large parking spaces are available. If these are overcrowded, you can also park at the Apfelhotel Torgglerhof, which is also the only stop on the way. The Waalweg leads past the Torgglerhof and parallel to the Passer through forests and apple fields.
The path itself is very varied and leads through meadows and orchards, protected by railings, past rock faces and through a beautiful landscape. Along the entire route you can enjoy the view of the villages of Riffian, Kuens and Dorf Tirol on the opposite side of the valley and out of the valley into the Merano basin.
The trail ends at Planta Castle in Merano-Obermais. From there it is about 20 minutes to the centre of Merano. There you can take the bus ( line 240 at the stop Meran Therme ) to Sankt Leonhard. The bus stops directly at the Hirzerbahn. ( Hotels in Meran buchen…. )
The walking time is about 3 hours. ( Wander- und Reittouren in Südtirol…. )
