Great victorian hotel right by the sea – the Winchester Mansions in Cape Town
Cape Town is one of the dream destinations of many travellers and is rightly regarded as one of the top destinations in the world. This also applies to the hotel offer. On the popular platforms, there are around 3000 hotels* to suit every budget and taste. A special hotel is the Winchester Mansions, which welcomes its guests in a great Victorian ambience.
We have visited the Winchester Mansions* and share our impressions.
Winchester Mansions Cape Town
The Winchester Mansions Hotel is located in the Sea Point district directly on the promenade with a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Hotel and sea are separated by a 4-lane road. The journey time from the airport is approx. 40 minutes, to downtown Cape Town it is approx. 10 minutes by car. From the hotel you have a beautiful view of Table Mountain.
Architecturally the Winchester Mansions reflects the Cape Dutch architecture, which is reminiscent of a Victorian style.
Winchester Mansions – Rooms
Doublerooms and suites are offered. Access is via arcades overlooking the inner courtyard. The double room we lived in was on the top floor with a view of the sea from the side.
The room was classically furnished and spacious. The bathroom was also spacious and equipped with a combined bath / shower tray The bathroom window was facing the portico. A defective bathroom ventilator was immediately repaired. With 2 cupboards and further compartments in the sideboard there was enough storage space.
A sufficient number of sockets, including European ones, were available. Please note that a separate adapter is required for South Africa. We also used the Skross World Travel Adapter* in combination with a South Africa plug* and were very satisfied.
The disadvantage is that the road is clearly audible when the window is open.
Winchester Mansions – Breakfast
Breakfast can be taken either in the restaurant or in the courtyard. Breakfast is offered as a buffet. The drinks are brought to the table by the service. Breakfast is plentiful and hot meals are served at a cooking station as well as a large selection of sausages and cheese. Yoghurt and muesli as well as desserts are also on offer. The service is very friendly and fast. The quality of the food is good.
Dinner is offered in Harvey´s restaurant, where you can also end the evening. Especially the bar was very well frequented and it was difficult to get a seat.
Winchester Mansions – Jazz Brunch
One of the highlights is certainly the Jazz Brunch, which takes place every Sunday between 11 – 14 o’clock. The brunch can be booked directly via the hotel’s homepage by e-mail. The brunch is very popular and booked weeks in advance. The choice of food is overwhelming and there is something for everyone. The guests are entertained with great live jazz music in a weekly changing line-up. However, the tables and chairs are very tight.
Our tip – visit Table Mountain first thing in the morning and escape the crowds and enjoy the Jazz Brunch afterwards. It’s worth it.
Winchester Mansions – Miscellaneous
The hotel has its own parking lot, but you can park for free on the street in front of the hotel. One stop of the Hop on Hop Off Bus* is directly in front of the hotel. A walk along the promenade is recommended. The popular V&A Waterfront is about 45 minutes walk away.
Winchester Mansions – Conclusion
The Winchester Mansions is a quality hotel with charm and style. The location by the water and the good traffic connections speak for the Winchester Mansions as accommodation in Cape Town. Visitors should not miss the Jazz Brunch.
