Enjoy Majorca in December – Advent season with a difference
Majorca in December is an experience. The island is quiet, contemplative and you can experience the real Majorca together with the Majorcans. Majorca in December is worthwhile and it is important to plan early. For example, Lufthansa currently offers cheap flights from Frankfurt to Palma. For us another reason to visit Majorca again in December.
Majorca in December – what speaks for it?
Majorca – the yearning island of many Germans, often called the 17th federal state, lures with great landscape, sun, sea and Spanish way of life. Palma de Majorca with its old town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
The other side of the coin is that during the summer months Majorca is hopelessly overcrowded and expensive, and in December it shows itself from its other side. The island is empty and quiet. The beautiful landscapes of the island come fully to the fore. The winter sun bathes Majorca in a wonderful light and you have space to walk, hike and stroll.
We love the Playa de Palma for its proximity to Palma and the airport and for the comprehensive hotel and restaurant offer. In the high season, however, Playa de Palma is often almost unbearable. In the pre-Christmas time, however, there is a wonderful silence and it is wonderful to walk on the promenade on a sunny winter day.
Perfect to enjoy the island’s gastronomic scene
Mallorca has a great gastronomic scene, which is constantly changing. Seven Michelin star restaurants or gourmet temples in chic boutique hotels to chilly beach bars, the island has everything to offer. And interesting new openings are springing up like mushrooms.
Especially trendy and new restaurants are completely overcrowded in high season, but many restaurants that are popular in summer close in winter. But many are also open all year round, ideal for locals and the few tourists who visit Mallorca in December and can pamper their palates without stress.
The following restaurants we can recommend
- The Tapas Bar La Rosa Vermutería in Palma is a must for anyone who wants to enjoy the Spanish way of life paired with great tapas in an exceptional atmosphere. ( Review by TFL )
- In the restaurant Mesón Ca’n Pedro in Palma price and quality are right. It is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists. – A must! ( Review by TFL )
- The Es Verger in Alaró is no longer an insider tip, but is worth it. You get a wonderful view and the best shoulder of lamb of Mallorca.

Enjoy the Christmas magic of the capital Palma
Those who want to visit Majorca in December should best choose the capital Palma de Majorca or one of the surrounding places, as we the Playa de Palma, as starting point. Around Palma, most hotels, shops and restaurants are open and in Palma, island life is concentrated, especially in December during the pre-Christmas period. Palma is then beautifully decorated and a stroll through the numerous Christmas markets is a real pleasure.
Also the temperatures in December favour a city trip. During several visits in December we had mostly around 15 – 20 degrees and could explore without sweating the best sights of Palma like the cathedral Catedral de Majorca, the Castell de Bellver, the Passeig des Born. Those who prefer shopping will also get their money’s worth in the pre-Christmas period.
Excursion destinations without tourist masses
What is valid for Palma, of course, is also valid for the rest of the island. Majorca in December, that means tourist sightseeings as the Cap de Formentor, the monastery Santuari de Llucdas or also popular excursion places as Valdemossa, Portocolom, Santanyí, Llucmajor, Manacor, Portopetro, Felanitx, Binissalem and Banyalbufar are pleasantly empty.
Its bargain time
In December there are only a few tourists on Mallorca. Therefore, flights, hotels and rental cars are very cheap, sometimes up to 50% cheaper than in summer.
Recommended hotels for December
- Our favourite on Playa de Palma in December – the Iberostar Llaut Palma*. ( Review at TFL )
- Also worth a visit – the Occidental Playa de Palma*
- The hotel with the most beautiful infinity pool in Palma and significantly reduced in December – the Nakar Hotel*.
The TFL conclusion
Majorca in December promises peace and relaxation on the favourite island of the Germans. At the same time you can enjoy a great pre-Christmas atmosphere and discover a Mallorca of a special kind. For us, a stay in Majorca during Advent is a must.
