Abdominal fat measurement with Bello – practical test and experience report
Bello measures your abdominal fat quickly and reliably in seconds. The smart gadget from Korea is in use at TFL since June. We tell you how to use Bello correctly and what benefits it has for you in everyday life.
Bello Everyday – the story
Visceral abdominal fat* bears high health risks because it is located around the organs. It is also called intra-abdominal fat. In the past, its function was to store energy reserves in case of a lack of food. Too much visceral abdominal fat is harmful. The fat stored inside the abdomen is very metabolically active. Visceral fat releases fatty acids, secretes inflammation-promoting messenger substances and releases hormones. Organs such as the liver or pancreas can be impaired in their work.

Conventional methods, such as the calculation of the BMI ( Body Mass Index ) are only conditionally suitable for the determination of body fat percentage. Measurement using a body fat scale* is also only conditionally suitable for measuring fat in the middle of the body.
This is where the makers of Bello* come in. Because the smart gadget is attached directly to the stomach and sends short-wave infrared rays through the tissue at the touch of a button. The measuring process itself takes only a few seconds. The measurement results are transferred to the Bello App, which was designed in-house.
Here the circle closes. The app is the central instrument, because the measurement results are not only stored but also processed. Bello is intended to create an ecosystem that supports the user with tips on nutrition and sports in daily activities. Of course, this also serves to further monetarize the service.
Bello was financed via the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. There you can buy it for about 300 USD. We have been using our Bello copy since July 2020.
Bello in use
The device was sent to us via FedEx at the beginning of July. It was annoying that besides the purchase price, additional customs duties and a presentation commission had to be paid, which made the purchase EUR 50 more expensive. This is not mentioned when ordering via Indiegogo and is extremely unsatisfactory from the point of view of a German user.
Bello – Unboxing
The Bello scanner is delivered in an appealing packaging similar to Apple products. A booklet and a USB charging cable are included.
Before the first use, the Bello App must be installed and the scanner must be checked for its charge status.
After the app installation you have to register and enter your personal data such as age, gender, weight and height. In addition, you have to measure your abdominal girth with a tape measure. This is the only way to correctly determine the “Metabolic Health Index” later on. It is also important to establish a connection to Apple Health.
Bello – the measuring / scanning process
The measuring process is relatively simple:
- Start the app and switch to the “Scan” screen. There you will be asked to connect the scanner
- Switch on the scanner with a short push on the button ( above ). The scanner beeps and reports with a Hi and after successful connection with an ok hook.
- Afterwards the measuring process starts by pressing the upper button. First the abdominal fat is measured above the navel and in the second step below the navel.
Throughout the whole process you will be guided with pictures. Everything is very simple, structured and well done. Unfortunately the app is only available in English.
Bello – Analysis and display in the app
The measurement results are transferred to the app and the user receives a display of his current “Bello Fat Level”.
After confirming the measurement results, they are displayed on the dashboard of the app. Here you get an overview of your values and your fitness status. Everything is well structured.

Bello – Our conclusion
The idea is good in principle. The Bello Abdominal Fat Scanner is a smart product that is easy to handle. The measurement is simple and the results are well presented in an app.
However, the app is also the biggest weak point. For one thing, it is only available in English. On the other hand, too little is done with the results.
- The data is not transferred to Apple Health.
- The videos are standardized and the user has no personal benefit.
This is where the manufacturer Olive Healthcare can and must take action. The ideal would be a program tailored to the user to improve health and fitness. This could then be monetized accordingly. Only then would the smart gadget become a real helper.
